Classic French Toast
Ingredients (Serves 2–3)
-
4–6 slices thick bread (brioche, challah, or day-old white bread work best)
-
2 large eggs
-
½ cup milk or cream
-
1 tbsp sugar (optional)
-
1 tsp vanilla extract
-
½ tsp ground cinnamon
-
Pinch of salt
-
Butter or oil, for cooking
Instructions
-
Make the custard:
In a shallow bowl, whisk eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until well combined. -
Soak the bread:
Dip each slice into the mixture for about 10–15 seconds per side. Don’t oversoak or it will fall apart. -
Cook:
Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add a little butter.
Cook bread slices for 2–3 minutes per side, until golden brown and cooked through. -
Serve hot:
Top with maple syrup, powdered sugar, fresh fruit, or a pat of butter.
Optional Variations
-
Extra fluffy: Use thick-cut bread and let it rest 1 minute after dipping.
-
Rich & custardy: Replace milk with half-and-half or cream.
-
Spiced: Add nutmeg or pumpkin spice.
-
Stuffed: Sandwich cream cheese or Nutella between two slices before dipping.
💡 Pro Tips
-
Slightly stale bread absorbs better without getting soggy.
-
Keep cooked slices warm in a low oven (100°C / 200°F) while finishing the batch.
