Instructions

Mix the thickener
In a small bowl, whisk cornstarch with ¼ cup cold milk until smooth (no lumps). -
Heat the milk
In a saucepan, heat the remaining milk with sugar and salt over medium heat. Stir until sugar dissolves. -
Thicken it up
Slowly pour in the cornstarch mixture while stirring constantly. -
Cook
Keep stirring (important!) until the mixture thickens and coats the back of a spoon, about 3–5 minutes. -
Finish
Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla and butter/cream if using. -
Chill or serve warm
