🧅 Amish Onion Fritters
These are crispy, golden, savory onion fritters—perfect as a snack, side dish, or appetizer. They’re simple, hearty, and full of flavor!
Ingredients (makes ~12 fritters)
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 2 large eggs
- ½ cup milk
- Oil for frying (vegetable or canola oil)
Instructions
1️⃣ Prepare the batter
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper.
- In another bowl, beat eggs and milk together.
- Gradually stir dry ingredients into wet ingredients until smooth.
2️⃣ Prepare onions
- Slice onions thinly and separate into rings or small pieces.
- Toss onions into the batter until fully coated.
3️⃣ Fry the fritters
- Heat ¼–½ inch of oil in a skillet over medium heat.
- Drop spoonfuls of onion batter into the hot oil.
- Fry 2–3 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove fritters and drain on paper towels.
4️⃣ Serve
- Serve warm with ketchup, ranch, or sour cream for dipping.
Tips
- Extra crispy: Add a tablespoon of cornmeal to the batter.
- Make it lighter: Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 15–20 minutes, flipping halfway.
